Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS)

Definition: Acute post surgical inflammation (non-infectious) due to toxic substance in the anterior chamber.

Clinical features: 

  1. Usually present 1-2 days after surgery with corneal oedema (limbus to limbus), hypopyon, fibrin and raised IOP.

  2. No vitritis and respond well to topical steroids.

  3. Check for any retained lens material.

​

Monitor closely as high risk of corneal decompensation, glaucoma or cystoid macular oedema.

​

HOT TIP: When unsure if it is TASS, treat as endophthalmitis.
