Optic Disc Pit Maculopathy

Optic disc pit:

  • Usually inferotemporal.

  • Often asymptomatic.

  • Symptomatic if causes macular schisis, LMH or macular detachment.

  • Incidence: 1 in 11,000.

  • Most cases bilateral.


Optic disc pit maculopathy:

  • Investigation – OCT and FFA.

  • RD related cases – 50% resolve ; 50% worsen.

  • Treatment choices:

  • 1. Observation

  • 2. Steroids

  • 3. Laser photocoagulation of peripapillary temporal (2-3 rows of laser spots)

  • 4. PPV +/- endolaser of optic disc pit margin + ILM peel and flap into pit + gas tamponade.
